Tell a Friend - and Others
Spread the word!
One of the most important ways in which you can change what's happening in our country is by talking with people you know. Tell them about the right-wing movement, its history, how it is funded and how it operates, and how the Commonweal Insititute will fight back to restore balance in the marketplace of ideas.
Telling others is a very important action. In a world in which people are bombarded with messages all the time—commercial, political, and entertaining—it is hard for anyone to focus and sort out what’s important. One of the mental short cuts we all use is to listen more attentively to messages from someone we know personally.
Further, since the well-organized right-wing message machine is dominating mass communication channels and public discourse, it’s even more important that people hear what’s really going on from a source they can trust—a person with whom they can identify, who knows what’s going on.
Tell a Friend or Relative. Telling a friend can start in small ways, such as a casual comment about the source of a piece of disinformation or the dubious motives of certain commentators or broadcasters.
Telling a friend can happen one-on-one, when you talk about something new you’ve just learned or about your decision to donate to Commonweal Institute.
Use E-mail. E-mail our web address http://www.commonwealinstitute.org to all your friends who may be sympathetic. Send them items from our website or our newsletters that may interest them.
Use Online Discussion Groups and Weblogs. Post comments to online discussion groups in which you participate. Write a note in your weblog or a comment on someone else's weblog. You can even post a link from your site to Commonweal Institute's site.
Talk to Groups. Telling a friend can also be done in group settings, through steering a conversation onto the topic of unbalanced news and the need for other opinions, other ways for people to express their concerns and be heard by those in power. If you’re comfortable with public speaking, you might even want to give a talk about these topics to groups; contact us for information and supportive materials for speakers.
Take Advantage of Talk Radio. If you have a point of view, call in on talk radio shows. Your comments can address the general imbalance in the ideas presented (if there is such an imbalance) and the misleading methods used by the right wing to create "conventional wisdom" in order to advance their agenda, as well as the specific topic of the show.
We encourage you to be creative and alert for opportunities to tell a friend. If you have a particular success in this effort, let us know through our Guest Book. We would appreciate hearing about your experiences.
