Take Action

We envision a society in which the advancement of human rights, civil liberties, participatory democracy, justice, strong and caring communities, and a more
secure and sustainable future coexist with responsible global capitalism.

If this is your vision, too, what can you do? Everyone can do something - lead, follow, support, teach, learn, talk with others. Here are some suggestions:

Get Informed

Get informed yourself, and inform others. Check out the books, videos, organizations, and news sources we recommend. Learn about progressive values and the growing progressive movement. Learn how the conservative movement was successful for so many years in promoting its values, and how they can be countered. And sign up to get our e-mail updates.

Get Involved

If you want the government to represent you, the first thing you have to do is register to vote – and then actually vote on Election Day. You can find out about candidates and officeholders, and give them a piece of your mind, too.

If you want to join with others helping to build a progressive movement that will represent your values and the issues you care about, and will work to amplify the voices of We the People, support the Commonweal Institute and other progressive organizations. Tell your friends about the work we are doing. Join our Facebook group. Put a link on your website to Commonweal Institute’s website or our Talking Politics program. If you want to get involved directly, contact us about volunteering to help us in our work.

Be Influential

Social networks are among the most powerful influences on people’s beliefs, values, and behaviors. You can help spread progressive values and ideas through contacts with your own family, friends, and acquaintances. Learn about the basics of civic dialogue and how to talk about politics with people unlike yourself. You may have a chance to take one of our Talking Politics with People Unlike Ourselves workshops. If you are facing a particular challenge in talking about political matters, check out Ask Kate!. She’s our resident expert. We offer suggestions of websites from which you can obtain talking points for political conversation. We encourage you to make civic discourse a regular habit by writing articles for magazines, organizational newsletters, and opinion pieces for newspaper. Become a regular participant in the blog world by reading, commenting on others’ blog posts, and posting articles yourself. And tell your friends if you would like them to get informed, get involved, and be more influential.
