How will the Commonweal Institute
communicate its ideas?
The Commonweal Institute will use contemporary
marketing and public relations techniques in communicating centrist
and progressive ideas to the general public and to a wide array
of target audiences, thereby shaping public debate and influencing
policy-makers. It will maintain close connections with its
various partners and audiences in order to determine how best to
influence the public agenda on an ongoing basis.
We will concentrate on directing progressive and moderate ideas
to specific demographic groups, and getting information and commentary
out rapidly and effectively. Our communications will be designed
to get facts and ideas out in simple, clear formats that people
can readily understand and use. We will use both mass media
and less conventional communication channels.
The principles underlying this communications strategy are threefold.
First, knowledge will be directed toward achieving practical
results. Research and policy analysis will naturally be central
to this endeavor, but they will not occur in a vacuum. The Commonweal
Institute is committed to translating information into action,
and analysis into decision-making. Secondly, the Commonweal
Institute's communications will present ideas in ways that speak
to people's deepest values and resonate with them emotionally. Finally, messages will be crafted with specific audiences
and specific purposes in mind. This will maximize their effectiveness
and usefulness.
