What issues will the
Commonweal Institute address?
The Commonweal Institute functions as a multi-issue
organization. Therefore, it will address a wide spectrum
of issues--from campaign financing to education, from healthcare
to environment, from social security to national security. It
will develop policy positions on issues based on a set of core
principles:
- Commitment to future generations
- Inclusiveness and fairness
- A balance between the needs of business
and society as a whole
- Environmental protection
- Separation of church and state
- Personal choice and privacy
- Nuanced and comprehensive approach
to national security
By pursuing a long-term strategy and organizing
around a limited number of core principles, the Commonweal Institute
seeks to help moderates and progressives advance their broad range
of issues effectively. Additionally, the core principles
will form a common basis for working together to achieve our shared
goals.
There are many different causes that moderates, progressives,
and the broader public support, ranging from civil liberties to
reproductive rights to economic justice - and new issues are always
arising in national and state legislatures. Because the Commonweal
Institute will be a large, multi-issue organization, the specific
issues it supports may change over time, but the core principles
will constitute the permanent foundation on which our positions
and strategic aims will be built.
The Commonweal Institute's scholars and analysts will both develop
their own material and work closely with colleagues in other think
tanks to identify and synthesize the best of centrist and progressive
thinking and research. The Commonweal Institute will also
convene groups of scholars and opinion leaders to discuss the relative
merits of different solutions to social, economic, and environmental
problems, and decide on the most promising approaches.
The Commonweal Institute's long-term strategy division will
be responsible for establishing long-term goals and priorities
for the broad range of programs, activities, and issues that relate
to Commonweal Institute's core principles. The long-term
strategy group will also participate in decisions about the specific
policy positions the Commonweal Institute will take in its day-to-day
operations.
