Education
Commonweal Institute is committed to sustaining and enhancing public education, which historically has been vital to our country’s economic success and to the health of our democracy. Public education is an expression of a community’s shared commitment to future generations.
Public education provides opportunity for children from all economic and social backgrounds to acquire the basic knowledge and skills needed for personal success. It thereby enhances their ability to contribute to the economic, social, and cultural success of our society.
Public schools provide an environment in which newcomers can readily integrate into our multiracial and multicultural society. They promote inclusiveness and fairness, and are settings in which young people of all backgrounds can relate to those who are different from themselves.
they are non-sectarian and inclusive, public schools deliver objective, fact-based, education. In so doing, they respect the separation of church and state mandated by the Constitution.
- "We're All In This Together,"
a presentation by Commonweal Institute Fellow David C. Johnson to an organization that supports public education.
This talk discusses the strategy behind right-wing pundits' and politicians' use of dramatic hyperbole to denegrate public schools and teacher unions.
- "Responding to the Attack on Public Education and Teacher Unions,"
a ground-breaking Commonweal Institute report by David C. Johnson and Leonard M. Salle,
analyzes the conservative movement’s attack as a strategic process aimed at privatizing education.
The report provides a detailed plan for how public education advocates can work with their allies to form a network of organizations and individuals - an infrastructure - that will be able get their messages to the broad public and increase political support for public education.
This report can be downoaded as a 1MB PDF file that can be viewed in Adobe Reader,
or can be viewed as an online "HTML" web-page.
Printed copies of the report can be purchased for $25 each (including postage and handling).
